Ukraine signs MoU to build grain terminal at Lekki Port in Lagos.

London, United Kingdom- The Ukrainian government is set to build a grain terminal at the Lekki Port in Lagos, Nigeria, to help ensure food security in the African continent. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ukrainian Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food in collaboration and the international company, Lagos Free Zone, a venture of the Tolaram Group at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London, United Kingdom, on Friday, June 23, New Telegraph reported. 

According to a Ukrainian media outlet, a press service issued by the ministry disclosed that the MoU was signed by the Ukrainian First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Taras Vysotsky on behalf of the government. Vysotsky said: 

“Cooperation between the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food and the Lagos Free Zone will be aimed at the creation of the necessary infrastructure for ensuring further ceaseless supplies of Ukrainian agricultural products both to Nigeria and the entire African continent with the main goal of ensuring the food security in the regions in greatest need. 

“The Ukrainian agrarian sector will continue playing an important role in ensuring international food security, especially when the world population is increasing.

Ukraine has the capacity and the technical know-how to build a rice terminal being the largest exporter and producer of wheat before the start of the Russian-Ukraine war.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, revealed why he wants Africa to support his country in the war against Russia. 

During online meeting with Legit.ng and other African media in August, 2022, Zelenskyy, said “I am an open president.” He added by saying at the beginning of that, “I want our dialogue to be open…You can ask any questions... I promise to answer them openly.” 

Legit.ng also reported that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is leading seven African leaders on a peace mission between Ukraine and Russia. Ramaphosa, who has arrived at Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, will meet with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky today, June 16, before heading to Russia with his seven-member team on a peace mission.

Tinubu withdraws Shetty's ministerial nomination

There's an anthrax outbreak in Nigeria. By Adewunmi Adenekan Laboratory tests by the National Veterinary Research Institute laboratory confirmed that there's anthrax outbreak in Nigeria. The Federal Government has confirmed the first case of anthrax in the country, stating that the disease was detected in a farm in Niger State. Announcing the outbreak of the disease, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in a statement on Monday, July 17, 2023, said the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria had on Friday, July 14, 2023, been notified of animals manifesting symptoms of a suspected case of anthrax in a farm in Suleja, Niger State. “The case was in a multi-specie animal farm comprising of cattle, sheep and goats located at Gajiri, along Abuja-Kaduna expressway Suleja LGA Niger State, where some of the animals had symptoms including oozing of blood from their body openings — anus, nose, eyes and ears,”  the ministry said.
