Despite the allure of the lucrative deal, Mourinho has chosen to focus on his ongoing project at the Stadio Olimpico, where he has been at the helm for two seasons.
Al-Hilal, the most successful club in Saudi Arabia, initially approached Mourinho before turning to Juventus' Massimiliano Allegri, who also rejected their £17 million-per-season proposal. According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Mourinho made the decision to snub Al-Hilal's advances and remain committed to his role at Roma.
The offer from Al-Hilal would have made Mourinho the world's highest-paid manager in terms of net earnings, as Saudi Arabia does not impose a personal income tax. Currently, Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone is the highest earner at nearly £30 million, but his salary is subject to tax.
In Rome, Mourinho already enjoys a substantial salary of just over £8.1 million per year, making him one of the highest-paid managers globally. Only seven managers earn more than him, with Diego Simeone leading the pack, followed by Pep Guardiola (£19.7 million) and Jurgen Klopp (£15.7 million).
During his tenure at Roma, Mourinho achieved success by guiding the team to the inaugural Europa Conference League title in the 2021/22 season, defeating Feyenoord 1-0 in the final. This season, he led Roma to the Europa League final, where they narrowly lost on penalties to Sevilla. In Serie A, Mourinho's side secured consecutive sixth-place finishes.
Speculation had arisen in May that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) was considering Mourinho as their new manager, amid reports of strained relations between Mourinho and Roma's general manager, Tiago Pinto. However, Mourinho's gesture to the fans at the end of the Serie A season, where he repeatedly pointed to the pitch, hinted at his desire to remain with the club.
With a year remaining on his current contract, Italian media outlets, including Football Italia, have been reporting that Mourinho is in negotiations for a new deal with Roma. The Special One seems determined to continue his work with I Giallorossi, aiming to build on the progress made during his time in Rome.
